The shooting, which is the deadliest in modern Austrian history, occurred on a Tuesday morning at BORG Dreierschützengasse, a federal upper secondary school.

I am utterly shaken by this terrible news from my birth town. I will never, for the life of me, understand why there is any need for private citizens to own firearms. I am so sorry for the families and friends of the victims, and for everyone who was forced to make this traumatic experience. I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish they must be going through now.

Life is precious and fickle. Enjoy it as much as you can, and tell your loved ones that you love them every day.
