Immovable Protector and God of Fire, Sasaguri, Japan

福岡県・篠栗町・南蔵院

At Nanzoin Temple in Sasaguri, Fukuoka, Japan, this is the statue of Acalanatha, an immovable protector and god of fire.

Called Dai-Fudōmyōō (大不動明王) in Japanese, this statue has a sword in its right hand, a rope in its left, and flames leaping up behind. One eye looks upward while the other looks downward, and the mouth is closed, but with one tooth pointing upward and one pointing downward. This depiction symbolizes an all-seeing power.

Nanzoin is home to a famous Reclining Buddha Statue that is said to be the biggest bronze statue in the world.

Shot with Mamiya 6 and 50mm f/4 lens on Fujicolor Pro 400H medium-format film.
