Autumn at Sagano, Kyoto, Japan [2]: Nisonin Temple

After wrapping up the visit to Seiryōji Temple, a short westbound walk through a pleasant residential area takes me to Nisonin (二尊院), the second temple on today’s autumnal tour through the Sagano district of western Kyoto, Japan. Founded in the mid-9th century, Nisonin derives its name from the fact that there are two main images here: one statue of the founding Buddha and another statue of one who has reached enlightenment; or in short, Nison refers to these “two revered images”. Both of these Heian period Buddhist statues are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

Knowing that I want to see one more temple in this area, I finish my visit to Nisonin, not without taking one last look at the stairs that are engulfed in seasonal colors [2].
